This is a story about a victim who wins.

Karen Moe, Victim: a feminist manifesto from a fierce survivor
Cover Design: Bobbi Sue Smith

In 1994, Karen Moe was abducted for almost twenty-four hours. This memoir follows a young woman from a pre-abduction motel room; to the abduction where, within seconds, her life changed forever; to gaining the upper hand, tricking the serial rapist, catching him and being instrumental in putting him in prison for life. “As far as I was concerned, I was already dead,” she realizes through writing. “And, strangely enough, little did I know then, thinking I was dead was starting to give me power—I had nothing to lose.”

But this is not a crime story. This is not even just a survivor’s tale. This is a manifesto.

In dialogue with other feminists and through case studies from around the world, Moe uses her trauma to shine a light on how not only violence against women, but all exploitation, is a natural result of patriarchal hierarchy. Yes, this is Moe’s story of triumph over violence, but it is also a call-to-action for both men and women.

“In the end, what I have suffered and survived has given me a gift. Or has given me the gift of giving myself one: the gift of knowing my strength and what I can survive. And now, resistance, fighting for justice, is what I live for. My life is far bigger than myself.”

“This work relates her harrowing experience, but it’s much more complex than a typical true-crime memoir … A bold and well-constructed work that takes on difficult topics in a compelling way.” Kirkus Reviews.

“If you like books that could change the world, you will love this book! Tammy Ruggles for Readers’ Favorite. Five Stars.

“Victim is Karen Moe’s impassioned manifesto … Victim is visceral. It is a difficult book to put down. And it is a compelling must-read!” Victor Malarek, author of The Johns: Sex for Sale and the Men who Buy It.

“A beautifully written, forensically researched story of resistance and  revolution. This powerful book is an important tool in the feminist fight against male violence.” Julie Bindel, author of Feminism for Women: The Real Route to Liberation.

“Victim is a rich and soulful testament to the power of human resilience that redefines the meaning of victimhood itself.” Daniel Gawthrop The British Columbia Review.

“Moe moves in and out of her story to the larger question: How do we make this broken world safe for women and children? How do we create a world worth living in?” Robert Jensen author of The End of Patriarchy: Radical Feminism for Men.

“A tour de force true story of surviving and surmounting the unthinkable. Victim is literary nonfiction at its best.” Sally Clark, author of The Way of The Warrior Mama: The Guide To Raising and Protecting Strong Daughters.

“Victim will sound in your blood and psyche forever as you learn to see the world through unveiled and awakened eyes.” Catherine Owen, author of Riven and Locations of Grief: An Emotional Geography.

“A call to action for all of us—women and men. You will want to put it down, but you can’t, because it’s so compelling.”  Marie McKenzie, #1 Amazon bestselling author of Things That Keep Me Up At Night.

“This is a rigorously researched history of violence against women, and a treatise on how societal behaviour can be improved. Read this book and be informed.” Dennis E. Bolen, author of Anticipated Results.
